Encounters of the scaly kind

7:48 PM

About a week ago I procrastinated until nightfall to feed the chickens. This used to be routine for me, working after dark. However, now I try to actually get out and do these things before I can't see.

So I went out there, the moon was bright, so I didn't require a flashlight. I moved over the mosquito nets that hang around the rabbit hutch, and felt something weird.

I pulled out my iPhone and turned on the flashlight app, moved over the mosquito nets, and screamed like a small child.

The two largest rat snakes I've seen in the wild were intertwined hanging from the nesting boxes under the rabbit hutch.

My boyfriend hears me scream while he's walking the dogs and comes running with towels because he thinks I've been bitten by something.

Basically at this point I'm trying to get photos to document that this really happened.

It is not a new experience, I've encountered possums, raccoons, and snakes during the night. I've rescued a cardinal that was caught in the coop's wire. My cat Leo was discovered in the chicken coop when he was a kitten.

However, I'm not usually frightened.

Anyway, here's some photos. I didn't edit them, they're just straight off my phone.

What are the weirdest critters you've seen at night?
