Visiting the Wall

5:42 AM

After lunch and our adventure in the graveyard the whole group met up to take a train to the Berlin Wall Memorial and to get our first look at a remaining piece of the wall.

It was our first real experience seeing the former divide between East and West Berlin.

For me though the greatest experience was seeing other people, of various different origins, viewing the wall (whether it was the first time or one of many).

While I knew that many people had died trying to cross the divide, I had never been able to put a face or a name to them. To see and hear their stories put a new perspective on the tragedy that befell so many at the wall.

Through the holes in the wall you can see life going on as normal. Things have changed so much that people barely acknowledge the wall anymore; a piece of a tragic history that has now just faded into the landscape of Berlin, sitting patiently as a reminder for those who want to notice it.

Afterwards we visited our first biergarten in Berlin.

Luckily many people working there spoke English and the man helping me recommended the couscous (the most delicious part of my meal).

Earlier in the day Robert and Andrew had recommended that I try Berliner Weisse, a tart beer that's flavored with either a red or green syrup.

They were delicious so of course I tried both (but the red was better).

We started getting a little rowdy from jetlag and beer. Catie Flately is pictured above, and I'm pictured below.

A suitable start to a group trip in Berlin.
