Sometimes good things happen

8:45 AM

So I've been spending the morning alternating between being productive (homework) and putting together a "Links I Like" post. I finally saw this video, and thought I could not do it justice by just putting it in a pile of other links.

If you haven't seen this video yet, an elderly women survives the Oklahoma Tornado, and mid-interview finds her dog she thought was lost in the rubble. This broke me down, and I cried when they zoomed in on the dog. I keep re-watching this.

One of my greatest fears with natural disasters is that I know I will lose some of my pets. I have a lot of pets, and even preparing them for a hurricane can be difficult, even with all the notice ahead of time. I can't imagine a tornado.

This woman Barbara Garcia, was so strong. It is astounding how cool and collected she was in the face of complete disaster.

When the journalist asks, "Are you able to comprehend yet what happened here?", Garcia responds, "I know exactly what happened here".

It's so amazing that someone whose home and familiar existence has been obliterated by this storm, could walk out of disaster with such poise.

She only starts to break down when they find her beloved friend. "Well I thought God just answered one prayer to let me be okay, but he answered both of them; because this was my second prayer".

To me this video was significant in another way because this little dog has such a resemblance to my Jetta, a black schnauzer. Which is one of the reasons this really hit me. However, there is someone else this dog resembles.

Toto.

Various news sources were reporting early that this dog was in fact named Toto. Slate reporter Josh
Voorhees claims to have heard "Toto" in the video. In fact, the dog's name is unclear; my theory is "Betsy". It is understandable that Voorhees, and other reporters, heard Toto. Who wouldn't want that to be his name? Who wouldn't want this little terrier who survives a tornado to be named Toto?

Sometimes good things happen. Sometimes Dorothy and Toto ride out the storm together.

Want more?
-CBS's video on their website has further footage of the dog after they remove him from the rubble.
-Here's a video from two years ago where a woman finds the only missing of her three cats after a tornado

Upon finding her cat Judy Pugh says , "I have everything in the world now".

-Want another? The video isn't working, but here's the story about a woman last year who found her cat Bear after a tornado on camera with the Weather Channel

I'll put up another post today with what I was working on before. Hope you enjoyed this one.
